You have decided to book your first Vedic astrology consultation. Good. Whether you are coming with a specific question, a career decision, a marriage consideration, a business timing question or simply wanting to understand your birth chart better, a little preparation will make the difference between a session that feels genuinely useful and one that feels too brief and incomplete.
This guide covers everything you need to gather, understand, and think through before your first astrology consultation so that when you sit down with an astrologer, every minute of that session goes toward something that actually matters to you.
Why preparation matters for an astrology consultation
A Vedic astrology reading is built entirely around your birth chart, your Kundali. And your Kundali is built entirely around three pieces of information: your date of birth, your exact time of birth, and your place of birth.
Without all three, an astrologer is working with an incomplete picture. The Lagna, your ascendant, which changes every two hours, cannot be calculated without the birth time. The Dasha system, which determines your current planetary period and what it means for your life cannot be accurately mapped without it either.
Preparation is not a formality. It is the foundation of everything that follows.
The complete pre-consultation checklist
1. Find your exact birth time
This is the single most important piece of information in a Vedic astrology consultation and the one most people arrive without.
How to find it:
- Birth certificate (the most reliable source).
- Hospital records from the time of birth.
- Your mother or a family member who was present.
- A family diary or horoscope made at the time of birth (common in Indian families - check with grandparents or older relatives).
What if you do not know your birth time?
An approximate time is better than no time. If your mother remembers "early morning" or "just after sunset," note that down. If not available, then also we have methods to find the birth time. Birth Time Rectification (BTR) is one such practice that Acharya Lokesh Dhamija follows as an astrologer.
2. Note your complete date and place of birth
Date of birth: Day, month, and year. Straightforward - but note it correctly. An error in the birth year changes everything.
Place of birth: City and country. For a Vedic astrology reading, the latitude and longitude of your birthplace is used to calculate the positions of the planets at the exact moment of your birth. "Delhi" and "London" produce fundamentally different charts for the same time of birth.
If you were born in a smaller town, note the nearest major city as a reference point and mention the town name specifically so your astrologer can locate it precisely.
3. Write down your primary question or concern
Most people come to a first astrology consultation with more than one question. That is completely understandable, life rarely presents itself as one clean topic.
However, a consultation has limited time. And the more focused your question, the more specific and useful the answer.
Before your session, sit quietly and ask yourself: if I could get clarity on only one thing from this consultation, what would it be?
Write it down. Then, below it, list two or three secondary questions in order of priority. When the session begins, share this list with your astrologer at the start. It helps them structure the reading around what actually matters to you.
Common questions that work well in a first consultation:
- Is this a good time to change jobs or career?
- What does my chart say about my current relationship or marriage prospects?
- Why does a particular pattern keep repeating in my life?
- What is my current Dasha period and what is it asking from me?
- Is this the right time to start or expand a business?
- What do the next 12 months look like for me across key areas of life?
4. Bring a timeline of significant life events
This is optional but highly valuable, especially for a first consultation.
A timeline of key events helps the astrologer cross-reference what the chart shows against what actually happened in your life. It validates the chart's accuracy, calibrates the reading, and allows the astrologer to show you exactly where major events show up in your planetary periods.
Events worth noting:
- Career: major job changes, promotions, periods of difficulty or growth
- Relationships: significant relationships, marriage, separation
- Health: any major health events for you or immediate family
- Finance: periods of significant financial growth or difficulty
- Education: key transitions in your academic life
- Personal: any major life changes or turning points
You do not need to share everything. Share what feels relevant to the questions you are bringing to the consultation.
5. Prepare your mind: What a consultation is and is not
This is perhaps the most underrated form of preparation.
Many people arrive at a first astrology consultation with one of two expectations - and both tend to get in the way.
Expectation 1: The astrologer will tell me what to do.
A good astrology consultation does not make decisions for you. It gives you the context of your planetary period, timings, the patterns your chart shows that helps you make better decisions yourself. You are still the one walking the terrain.
What to expect instead:
A good consultation will give you a clear picture of where you are in your life's natural cycles. It will identify what this particular phase is supporting and what it is not. It will surface patterns you may not have noticed or named. And it will give you enough clarity to make better decisions, not by replacing your judgment, but by informing it.
Come with curiosity rather than expectation. Come willing to hear something you did not already know. Come open to the possibility that the most useful thing you learn might not be the answer to the question you arrived with.
6. For an Astro Vastu consultation
If you are visiting for an astro-vastu consultation combining your birth chart with a directional energy analysis of your home or office bring or send the following before the session:
- A rough floor plan or sketch of the space (hand-drawn is perfectly fine)
- The direction your main entrance faces (use a compass app on your phone - stand at your door facing outward)
- The compass direction of each room (bedroom, kitchen, study, living area)
- Any specific area of the space that feels "off" or where problems seem to cluster

7. For a numerology consultation
Numerology readings use the name as it appears on your official documents, not a nickname, not a shortened version. If your name has been spelled differently on different documents (a common situation in India), note all versions and let your astrologer know.
Also note: your partner's name, your business name, and the name of any property you own if these are relevant to your questions.
8. Set aside uninterrupted time
A 45-minutes astrology consultation that is interrupted three times is effectively a 30-minute consultation.
Book your session at a time when you can give it your full attention. This means:
- A quiet space with no background noise or interruptions
- Phone notifications off or on silent
- No children requiring immediate attention in the background
- Not during a commute or while multitasking
For an online consultation, test your audio and video connection 10 minutes before the session begins. A technical problem at the start of a session eats into your reading time.

9. Summary Report
Do not be worried about how you will recall each and every information shared by Acharya Lokesh Dhamija during the consultation.
Once your consultation is concluded, you would receive a detailed/ summary report from our end with findings, remedies and suggested way ahead. 10. Come with an open mind about what you hear
A good astrologer will not only tell you what you want to hear. They will tell you what the chart shows - including things that may challenge an assumption you have been making about your situation.
The most useful consultations are often the ones where the astrologer surfaces something the client had not consciously articulated: a pattern, a timing issue, a blind spot - rather than simply confirming what they already believed.
Stay open to that possibility. The chart sees things that even the most self-aware person misses about their own life.
What to do after your consultation
Within 24 hours:
Review your notes while the session is fresh. Write down the three to five most important things you learned or that resonated. Note any specific timing the astrologer mentioned: Dasha changes, significant transit windows, remedies to be done to your calendar. Following up on remedies in a timely manner is very important.
Within one week:
If the consultation included Vastu remedies, identify which ones are immediately actionable without cost or structural change and do those first.
